In Palermo the premiere of Sh’hili, with local organizations and director Habib Ayeb we talk about social and climate justice

What do we think of when we talk about social justice? Few reflect on climate, climate change and climate justice. The screening of the docufilm Sh’hili (Sirocco), held on October 21 at the Rouge et Noir cinema in Palermo, offered an important opportunity to reflect on this link.

The director Habib Ayeb, guest of honor of the event, introduced his work within a series of meetings related to the project “Youth for Peace in the Mediterranean Sea (YxP)”. These meetings aim to stimulate debate within the community on social justice, analyzing key concepts such as peace education, climate justice, access to rights in a collective and participatory way. The documentatio, filmed in France, Italy, Tunisia and Morocco, collects the voices of farmers, farmers and experts, outlining a multifaceted picture of climate change and the impact it has not only on their lives, but also on those of each of us. These testimonies were useful in evoking a sense of closeness and therefore concrete awareness of the climate (and consequently also social) crisis we are going through.

Following the screening, a round table was held with Ayeb and representatives of the Valdibella agricultural cooperative, the Noe Cooperative, the School of Agroecology and Climavore. The discussion immediately highlighted the link between the climate crisis and social commitment, then labeling climate change as a real global crime. The concept of “climate resistance” was then explored, described as a participatory and inclusive approach, which does not limit itself to defending itself from risks, but aims to transform and innovate the system, moving towards a more sustainable futureAgroecology, arboriculture, the recovery of ancient seeds and aridoculture are just some of the techniques told us. In closing, a question from the audience allowed us to reflect on the cooperation between states, movements and peoples in the field of social justice. “If internationalism existed,” Ayeb commented, “we would not witness the violations of rights in Palestine and Lebanon.” Youth for Peace in the Mediterranean (YxP) will continue to explore these issues, trying to open new avenues of collective reflection and exploring solutions for a more just future.
